  • JJR Wins ASLA and APA Awards /

March 2010 - The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), Wisconsin Chapter has presented JJR with two planning and design awards, including the ASLA's highest award for professional work. A California-based jury gave JJR the Award of Excellence for Design for Lakeshore State Park and an Honor Award for the Kinnickinnic River Corridor Neighborhood Plan. A total of five awards were given out this year by Wisconsin ASLA.

The American Planning Association (APA), Wisconsin Chapter also recognized the Kinnickinnic River Corridor Plan with a 2010 Plan Document Award. A total of four awards were given out this year by Wisconsin APA.

Lakeshore State Park is a 17-acre man-made island that is Wisconsin's first urban state park and a celebration of its Great Lakes heritage and legacy. The park includes native landscaping, interpretive features, naturalistic open space, bioengineered shoreline, a signature pedestrian bridge, accessible trail/pathway system, a large and small water craft basin, small boat beach, fishing access, and transient boat dockage. This project received the Award of Excellence, the highest award an ASLA jury can bestow.

JJR worked with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center to develop the Kinnickinnic River Corridor Neighborhood Plan for the corridor surrounding the Kinnickinnic River on the south side of Milwaukee. The river, which was channelized and concrete-lined in the 1960s, currently poses health and safety risks to nearby residents due its inability to safely convey floodwaters.  Rehabilitating the river will include significantly widening the existing channel and removing as many as 84 existing homes in the dense and narrow residential corridor. The planning team used the context of this major catalytic project to provide recommendations for maintaining the neighborhood character and affordability, replacing the lost housing with new developments, finding new opportunities for economic development, greening the existing neighborhood through sustainable initiatives, improving the parks, and creating new quality neighborhood open space and connections. The new KK River corridor is envisioned to include bike and walking paths, naturalized stream banks, water quality treatment facilities, aquatic habitat improvements, community gardens, outdoor classrooms and other educational opportunities.
